Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica in 2025, causing major damage to the western half of the country.

Our African Symbol Guesthouse escaped with minimal damage, but many homes have yet to recover from the devastating damage. Jamaica lacks the economic strength to provide support to help the poor get back on their feet.

The government only provides assistance to homeowners whose land and buildings are registered. Many poor people build their homes by hand on vacant land and do not register them, so they cannot receive any assistance.

The government is providing virtually no economic assistance to poor people who have lost their homes and belongings.

We started this fund out of a desire to do something to help the economically disadvantaged poor in Jamaica.

The relief fund is operated by Desmond Symbol, owner of the Montego Bay-based African Symbol Guesthouse and African Symbol Recording Studio, and his partner, Japanese reggae recording artist Rankin Pumpkin (Yoko Matsui).

Clothing, including children's clothing, other daily necessities, household goods, etc..

For used clothing, please refrain from donating items that are out of date or that are worn, dirty, or damaged. Only clean, washed clothing is accepted. Please be sure to clearly mark the donation as "used clothing."

New items are welcome, but new items will incur customs duties. Please contact us in advance if you are sending new items. Please remit the customs duties amount.

We provide solar lights to homes without electricity.

As part of our efforts, we are visiting the hardest hit mountain areas to provide solar lights, sheets, clothing, children's clothes and other household items.

We hope to bring a little joy to those in need in remote areas with those gifts, encourage them to say not to give up and assist them.

We are based at the African Symbol Guesthouse in Montego Bay, and we hope to expand to Trelawny, St. James, and, as long as our aid funds last, to Westmorland, St. Elizabeth, and other places.

Rebuilding homes of disaster victims

This house was on top of a mountain called Bogue Hill in the suburbs of Montego Bay and was completely destroyed. There were many handmade wooden houses there, and an elderly man in the neighborhood died. There were not many sturdy concrete houses that could be used as shelters, and all the houses were full of evacuees, so he chose to stay in his own home and was hit by a broken wood.　Aid did not reach the mountaintop and the damage was severe. This was a scenic spot that many tourists visited. We aim to rebuild the house so that it can also function as a local shelter and become a tourist spot that can revitalize the community.

All donations are collected in an account under Yoko Matsui's name.
